Preparation
- Heat the oven to 350°F and lightly butter a 9 inch square baking dish or similar.
- Toss apples with lemon juice, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cornstarch. Spread in the dish.
- In a bowl, mix oats, flour, brown sugar, and salt. Rub in the cold butter with your fingertips until crumbly with some pea sized bits. Stir in nuts if using.
- Scatter the crumble evenly over the apples. Do not press it down too hard.
- Bake for 40 to 45 minutes until the top is deep golden and the apples are bubbling at the edges.
- Cool for 10 to 15 minutes before serving.
Notes
Serve warm with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, or a splash of cold heavy cream. For make-ahead options, assemble filling and topping separately and refrigerate, bake within 24 hours.
