Method
Preparation
- Preheat your oven according to package instructions or 350°F if making from scratch.
- Grease and flour your cake pans, bake until a toothpick inserted comes out clean, about 30-35 minutes.
- Cool the cakes completely, about an hour.
Whipping the Cream
- In a chilled bowl, add heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract. Beat on medium until soft peaks form, approximately 3-5 minutes.
Preparing the Cherries
- If using fresh cherries, wash, pit, and slice them. For canned cherries, drain and reserve the juice.
- Combine cherries with 1/4 cup of reserved cherry juice and let them macerate for about 10 minutes.
Assembling the Trifle
- Select a large glass bowl or individual cups to highlight the layers.
- Layer chocolate cake cubes, followed by cherries, whipped cream, and vanilla pudding. Repeat layers and finish with whipped cream topped with chocolate shavings.
Chilling
- Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.
Notes
Make-ahead convenience; tastes better as it chills. Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 3 days.
