Ingredients

For the Hamburger Steaks
  • 1 lb ground beef Opt for ground chuck for a juicier patty.
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs Use plain or seasoned.
  • 1 large egg Helps bind the patties together.
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder Fresh garlic works too if you prefer!
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder Enhances the onion flavor.
  • 1/2 tsp salt Adjust according to taste.
  • 1/4 tsp ground black pepper Freshly ground for maximum flavor.
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil Can substitute with olive oil.
For the Onion Gravy
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced Yellow onions are perfect for caramelizing.
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour Helps thicken the gravy.
  • 2 cups beef broth Choose low-sodium for better control of seasoning.
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce Adds depth; Lea & Perrins recommended.
  • 1/2 tsp dried thyme Fresh thyme is also a fantastic choice.

Method

Preparation
  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until well incorporated (about 2-3 minutes). Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape into patties, about 1-inch thick.
Cooking the Steaks
  1. Heat the vegetable oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties once the oil is shimmering. Cook for 4-5 minutes on each side until beautifully browned and cooked through (internal temperature should reach 160°F / 70°C). Remove and set aside.
Making the Gravy
  1. In the same skillet, add the thinly sliced onions. Cook over medium heat for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally until they become soft and deep golden brown.
  2. Sprinkle the flour over the caramelized onions and stir, cooking for an additional minute. Gradually add beef broth while whisking continuously to avoid lumps. Add Worcestershire sauce, thyme, and salt and pepper. Allow it to simmer for 5-7 minutes until thickened to your liking.
Combining and Serving
  1. Carefully return the hamburger steaks to the skillet, spoon the gravy over them, and let them simmer together for another 2-3 minutes.
  2. Serve the savory hamburger steaks over mashed potatoes or rice, and don’t forget a side of steamed vegetables.

Notes

Keep the heat controlled when caramelizing onions to prevent burning. For added richness, stir in some sour cream to the gravy just before serving.
