Preparation
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13 inch baking pan.
- In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, spices, and salt.
- In another bowl, cream the softened butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.
- Beat in the molasses and egg until well combined.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with the hot water, mixing until smooth.
Baking
- Pour the batter into your prepared baking pan and smooth out the top.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Allow to cool for 10 minutes in the pan before transferring it to a wire rack.
Notes
Letting it rest allows the flavors to meld beautifully. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days. It can also be frozen for up to three months.
