Ingredients

For the Puff Pastry
  • 2 sheets puff pastry sheets (10" by 10") Ensure they’re from a good brand like Pepperidge Farm for best results. Thaw them in advance for ease of use.
For the Filling and Toppings
  • 1/2 cup Nutella Feel free to substitute with a hazelnut spread of your choice.
  • 1 large egg For the egg wash that gives the tree its shiny finish.
  • 1 tablespoon water For mixing with the egg to make the wash.
  • Icing sugar (optional) A lovely dusting at the end adds sweetness and festive flair.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Defrost the puff pastry sheets according to the package instructions and lay one sheet flat on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  3. Melt the Nutella over a double boiler or in the microwave for about 20-30 seconds to make it easier for spreading.
  4. Spread the melted Nutella evenly over the first puff pastry sheet.
  5. Carefully place the second puff pastry sheet on top of the Nutella-covered sheet, dusting lightly with flour to prevent sticking.
  6. Use a pizza cutter to cut the layered pastry into a large triangle shape.
  7. Use a cookie cutter to make star shapes from the scraps and set aside.
Shaping and Baking
  1. Make cuts along the sides of the triangle, about 1 inch apart, without cutting all the way through. Twist each section to give it a tree-like shape.
  2. Mix 1 egg with 1 tablespoon of water and brush this egg wash over the tree and the star shapes.
  3. Bake for 20 minutes, or until golden brown and puffed. Keep an eye on it to ensure it doesn’t burn.
  4. Once cooled slightly, dust with icing sugar before serving.

Notes

Ensure your puff pastry sheets are at room temperature for easy handling. If using frozen pastry, let it defrost in the refrigerator overnight or on the counter for 30-40 minutes.
