  • 1/2 teaspoon salt Enhances flavor.
Wet Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup milk Use whole milk or buttermilk, or almond/oat milk for lactose sensitivity.
  • 1 large egg Should be at room temperature.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Use pure vanilla for best flavor.
Frying Ingredients
  • Vegetable oil for frying Can use canola or peanut oil.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat the vegetable oil in a deep fryer or heavy pot to 350°F (175°C).

  3. In another bowl, whisk together milk, egg, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  4. Gradually stir the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients until just combined. Do not overmix; lumps are fine.
  5. Transfer dough to a floured surface and roll to 1/2 inch thickness.
  6. Use a sharp knife or pizza cutter to cut into strips about 1 inch wide and 4 inches long.
Frying
  1. Drop a few strips into the hot oil, frying for 2-3 minutes or until golden brown, turning occasionally.
  2. Remove the donut sticks with tongs and drain on a paper towel-lined plate.
  3. While still warm, roll in remaining 1/2 cup of sugar to coat.
Serving
  1. Serve warm with coffee, hot chocolate, or fruit preserves.

Notes

For optimal results, ensure all ingredients are at room temperature before mixing. Monitor oil temperature to avoid burning.
